The time has finally come, Jeep is introducing an EcoDeisel engine to the  Wrangler’s powertrain lineup! This means the most capable SUV ever created will be powered by the most fuel-efficient and highest-torque rated engine ever offered for the Wrangler! We are so excited about the introduction of this engine and all the adventures it opens the doors too. Continue reading the rest of our review to learn more about this engine and how capable it is!

What kind of power does the EcoDiesel engine make?

Under the hood of the four-door Wrangler Unlimited models, the EcoDiesel engine pumps out a ton of power and immense torque. Specifically, this 3.0-liter EcoDiesel generates up to 260 horsepower and 442 pound-feet of torque. Those numbers make this the most powerful engine to ever be found in a Wrangler model! No matter how steep the inclines or how treacherous the rock crawling is, this engine will get you to the end. Jeep mates this engine with an 8-speed TorqueFlight automatic transmission for improved efficiency and smooth shifting.

What does this power mean for off-roading and on-roading driving?

The Wrangler EcoDiesel model can accomplish things in 4WD-high that other Wrangler models cannot in 4WD-low thanks to additional torque. Plus, all Wrangler EcoDiesel models are outfitted with third-generation Dana 44 front and rear heavy-duty axles and a 3.73 axle ratio. When it comes to the transfer case, there are two options. The Command-Trac is found within the Sport and Sahara models with a 2.72:1 low-range gear ratio and a part-time two-speed transfer case. The Rubicon model is outfitted with a Rock-Trac system which comes with a 4.0:1 low-range gear ratio and a two-speed transfer case. This engine is also ready for some serious commuting and carpooling too!

Were any changes made to the EcoDiesel engine before it was made available for the Wrangler?

There were quite a few changes made to the third-generation EcoDiesel engine. They include new intake ports with higher flow capacity and low-friction pistons and a new water-cooled turbocharger with low-friction blades and bearings. The updated architecture features a new aluminum alloy and a 15-pound weight loss! The EcoDiesel engine also comes with a new fuel and exhaust system!
