2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee vs Chevrolet Equinox

Shopping for a new SUV is an important decision, and with so many options available on the market today, making your selection can be just as daunting as it is exciting. Here at Waynesboro CDJR, we know how much careful consideration goes into choosing the right SUV for you and your family’s needs. That’s why we’ve chosen two popular options and examined them side-by-side to compare their features, strengths, and abilities. We’ll be comparing the 2021 Grand Cherokee, and the 2021 Chevrolet Equinox to see which one ultimately comes out on top. Continue reading below as we compare and contrast these two popular SUV models!

2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee Power & Handling

The 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee has a versatile selection of engine options to accommodate its extensive seven-trim lineup. The first few trims enjoy the 3.6-liter V6 engine, with the option to upgrade to the 5.7-liter V8 offering an extra boost of power and torque. The SRT trim makes use of the 6.4-liter V8 which provides 475 lb-ft of torque and 470 horsepower, while the Trackhawk has its own 6.2-liter supercharged V8 offering up a bewildering 645 lb-ft of torque and 707 horsepower. The Grand Cherokee has excellent capabilities for both off-roading and racing performance, depending on the trim level you choose. Its maximum towing capacity is an impressive 7,200 lbs, and it has up to 8.6 inches of ground clearance thanks to its Quadra-Lift air suspension system.

2021 Chevrolet Equinox Power & Handling

The 2021 Chevy Equinox provides just one engine across all four of its trim levels, which is the 1.5-liter turbocharged inline-4. This engine offers 203 lb-ft of torque and just 170 horsepower, both of which fall short of the Jeep Grand Cherokee’s base engine. Front-wheel drive is standard, though all-wheel drive is available as you move up the trim levels. Unfortunately, the Equinox does not provide a 4-wheel drive option. The Equinox’s powertrain features a 6-speed automatic transmission with a fuel-saving idle start/stop system. Though this helps its fuel economy, it also requires drivers to restart their engines at stop signs or traffic lights, which may become inconvenient in certain situations. Driving the Equinox on paved roads is smooth and comfortable, though its athleticism doesn’t quite stand up to off-road excursions.

2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee Features & Design

The Jeep Grand Cherokee offers a wealth of luxurious and useful features, ranging from style options, and premium materials to stunning new technology and performance-enhancing equipment. The seats are clad in Nappa and Laguna leathers, with real wood accents available on the steering wheel. The Grand Cherokee features Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration, standard keyless entry and ignition, a 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot, single and dual-pane sunroof options, and advanced safety features as part of the Pro Tech I and II safety packages. The SRT and Trackhawk trims feature performance tires, sport-tuned suspension, and high-performance Brembo brakes.

2021 Chevrolet Equinox Features & Design

The Equinox’s lineup of four trim levels include features like LED headlights, a wireless charging pad, satellite radio, and a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment display with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. The Equinox divides its available features into an array of packages, many of which are optional to lower trim levels, and bundled into upper trim levels. For example, the available Confidence & Convenience Package includes heated front seats, remote start, a power liftgate, and extra safety features. Once you purchase the Confidence & Convenience Package, you gain access to the available Leather Package and Infotainment Package. The top-tier Premium trim includes the aforementioned bundles as standard equipment, but you can still purchase the additional Comfort & Convenience II Package to enjoy the full extent of the Equinox’s features.

Both these SUVs offer many exciting features, but after comparing them side-by-side we feel the Jeep Grand Cherokee is the stronger choice of the two. Its versatility is undeniable, and it offers more in terms of both torque and horsepower. We also like how each trim is different, and that additional features are included within the trim levels without having to purchase multiple packages to access them.
